Blog 9: Abbey-Grace Venham

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

In episode 9 of Kill the Lights: More Than Just an Athlete, I spoke to senior women’s tennis player Abbey Grace Venham. Abbey Grace is a fellow communications major at Piedmont. Abbey Grace recently had the chance to travel with some of the members of the communications programs to a conference in Atlanta. Abbey Grace mentions that she had a slap in the face moment. I thought it was interesting that she said that on the podcast. It allowed me to relate with someone my age about beginning the job search portion of your life after college. Abbey Grace seems to be on top of the situation, though she is currently monitoring three positions she has applied for. Abbey Grace was well-spoken, and I think she began selling herself short on the podcast. I think she is more than capable of being selected for one of the three positions. I believe that Abbey-Grace is more than qualified for any of these positions. Do you think double sports and mass communications majors deserve the upper leg in hiring? I think so; she is well-versed in both fields and knowing a lot about both puts her in a better position moving forward. Do you believe there is a difference in the material that mass and sports communications majors are taught in their time? Or do you think the material is similar, but there are different fields that both majors are stronger in?

Comm Law & Ethics (MCOM 4300) along with Advertising (MCOM 3700) are two of the most academically challenging courses in the MCOM major. Neither are required for SCOM. Enough said!?!🤣

I have heard about those two courses, and all I can say is I am thankful I do not have to deal with them! Considering these courses and how challenging they are, it almost seems like Mass Communications majors deal with a more challenging work load rather than Sports Communications majors. Those two courses alone say a lot.
